This would be a great device for use with mobile phones.

With the internals of phones able to run operating systems like Linux & Windows RT, this could enable a higher level of productivity by plugging in a phone to the HDMI port (MHL if it wasn't too much bother to implement).

If you could imaging this combined with the Ubuntu Edge phone (which sadly doesn't look like it'll make its funding goal), you could see the potential.

I don't have much to offer, but hope you can take it forward.

Just to be clear, I'd like someone who has the means to design and manufacture to contact me. It is patent pending and would love to work with someone to turn this into a reality.

...speakers due to the fact that HDMI carries audio. Also audio cues can be important even in a server environment. As a gamer, there is a headphone jack, which will serve as a extension cable. USB ports serve as an extension for your mouse and easy access. I would buy a small gaming PC and this portable display over a gaming laptop anyday. A gaming laptop is not upgradable but a desktop (even a compact mini ITX desktop) is.

The inspiration came from wishing I could plug the PC I was working on into my laptop and use it to control the PC. Unlike "remote desktop", I need to be able to get to low-level areas such as the BIOS, so RDP won't help. The other way of thinking of it is a laptop without it's guts. I added...

I would like something like this for repairing computers on-site. Also would like to pair it up with Falcon Northwest's Tiki gaming PC (or other mini ITX based gaming PC)

I really like this idea! If computing becomes a utility, which it is likely to, and all our personal data lives in the cloud, all one would really need to carry around would be some means of interacting with computers -- portable displays with an attached input device could be one such means. I definitely see a market for something like this in the future but I'm not sure how useful it would be with the current state of affairs.
